Events: Kate Spade Plaza Store Opening

I was lucky enough to attend the opening of the brand new Kate Spade store on the Country Club Plaza on Friday night, along with Jamie, and our sweet friend Jessie. Hosted by the ever stylish Meg Biram, the event was filled with color, pink champagne, fun freebies, and tons of beautiful, classic items from the one and only Kate Spade.  Here’s a few pics from the night…

The front of the store is definitely an eye catcher with it’s bright green signage and candy colored stripes.

Beautiful crystal and gold pendant light fixtures.
The gift boxes behind the check out counter are a lovely visual by themselves.
Guests got in line for a hand monogrammed Kate Spade canvas bag.
Jamie sampling some of the sweet treats.  Love the striped paper straws.
Enameled bangles and patent leather hand bags.

The jewelry was one of the most popular tables in the store.  Lots of sparkle and tons of gold and jewel tones.

My favorite piece was this candy striped bangle…

which I promptly purchased!

Thanks so much for joining us on our little tour of the Kate Spade store.  If you’re in the area it’s definitely worth stopping in for the fun shopping and the visual eye candy!

Favorite Thing: Halls Kansas City

Tucked away in the Country Club Plaza, Halls Kansas City, is one of the many gems of our city and of course, one of our favorite things. The three story store, gives locals and out of towners, a great shopping spot to grab everything on your list, either wish or need. It has an excellent customer experience, that is very personalized. I have even received a hand written note after one of my purchases, which is such a little thing that can really go a long way.

Among the extensive makeup counters with a wide variety of perfumes; the fabulous shoes, clothing and bag selection, Halls is also known for its wonderful home decor. With the holidays quickly sneaking up on us, I highly recommend visiting Halls to view all their ornaments and holiday decor. It is amazing and really gets me in the Christmas spirit. They have so many different ornaments – every shape, style and color you can think of – I could find a unique ornament for everyone on my list.

They also have many events going on throughout the year. Check out this link to see more details and stop by this weekend – they are having a HUGE sale.

tschoes,
Jamie

My Fall Decor.

I love decorating for the holidays but for some reason I barely have any fall decorations. This year, I decorated with my usual fall wreath and buying some small pumpkins and guards to place around the living room.

I have decided that when everything goes on sale, I am officially purchasing my favorite season’s decorations. Rather than purchasing just fall or just Halloween, I am wanting to combine the looks – for ease and savings. Plus, I like fall decorations over Halloween decorations.

West Elm: Papier-Mache Pumpkins, $12-$49

Pottery Barn: Ceramic Pumpkin, $129

Etsy, $20. Crate & Barrel: Vine Pumpkins, $5.95-$14.95

My favorite places to shop for decorations are Pottery Barn, Etsy, West Elm and Crate & Barrel.

Enjoy,
Ellen

Slow Roasted Tomatoes.

I recently received Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook, My Father’s Daughter, as an anniversary present and I immediately fell in love. The recipes are healthy, easy and the photography is beautiful. I drool when I read the book.

I would highly recommend this as a present to yourself, a friend or a future bride.

One of the first recipes listed in the cook book are her slow roasted tomatoes. They are amazing. Literally. I make them every Sunday night and use them up before the weekend starts. I put them on everything from salads to omelets to pasta to just eating them straight out of the container as a snack (I said literally!). Plus, my husband thinks they are wonderful and difficult to make.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Slow Roasted Tomatoes
Adapted by Ellen

Ingredients:
Tomatoes (lots of them)
Olive oil
Sea salt

Directions:
1) Preheat oven to 275.
2) Cut the tomatoes into four or smaller (if you do make these smaller, you will need to check on them occasionally to ensure they don’t burn).
3) Rub with olive oil and salt. Put on a baking sheet and roast seed side up for 3-5 hours.
4) They are complete when they look like sun dried tomatoes or almost all of the moisture has evaporated.
5) Keep in an air tight container with the juice leftover in the pan in the fridge for up to a week.

Go make some. Let me know what your thoughts are on them and if you made any changes to the recipe. Now, we can crave tomatoes year round!

Enjoy,
Ellen

Flowers and Centerpiece for Autumn

Fall is a great time of year for entertaining, and Halloween is always a great excuse to host a party.  There’s tons of ways to decorate your table or home for fall that doesn’t scream Halloween or Thanksgiving.  Here’s a few of my favorite takes on using pumpkins and fresh flowers to create centerpieces for your autumn event.

Ghost pumpkins are a huge trend in fall decor this year.  Open up the top, clean out the inside and add a vase of beautiful dahlias or mums.  The white color palette is a bit unexpected and modern. (via Martha Stewart.com)
You can also use mini pumpkins as votive holders.  These have also been embellished with a bit of silver spray paint to match the mercury glass pillars. (via Blissique).
Pumpkins aren’t the only produce available.  Here a cake stand holds pillar candles wrapped in artichokes, asparagus, and fall foliage with white mums.  This would be a super easy DIY and would work for any party throughout the autumn season. (via Blissique)
Everything about this set up is adorable.  It incorporates fall foliage, ghost pumpkins, and lots of fresh flowers in hues of orange and rust.  Texture plays an important role here with cat tails and berries mixed in for added interest. (via inspirationforhome
Thanks for checking out some of my favorite fall centerpiece ideas.  How are you planning to decorate your home for fall?

Mixing Prints.

Pinterest

 I love Pinterest. I love J.Crew.

You know when you see something in a J.Crew catalog and you really want to purchase it but you just don’t know how to wear it? You can find out how on Pinterest.

Pinterest

I get food and home inspiration from it but the best inspiration is for the fashion. Recently, I have been testing the waters on mixing prints. For those preppy style girls, mixing prints can be hard!

I still stick in my traditional style with mixing a print sweater and my leopard print flats.  I found some other great options on Pinterest that I am going to explore – stripes with tribal, stripes with flowers, stripes on stripes and, my favorite, dots with leopard.

I’ll share my outfit explorations soon!

Enjoy,
Ellen

Favorite thing: Slippers

I love slippers. Those warm, soft and comfy shoes that you can not wait to put on at the end of the day or first thing in the morning when you can curl up in your pjs on the weekends. Picking the perfect pair of slippers can be very similar to selecting those hot stilettos for a night out on the town. They still have to look and feel good (well your stilettos usually only feel good at the beginning of the evening). Havent you ever slipped into a good pair of slippers and thought they felt like walking on pillows? With the cold weather fast upon us, I started my hunt for a new pair of slippers.

There are these super cute ones with the floral detail. They are pretty, but I like a slipper that covers more of the foot.

Maybe wool…I love the dog! There are other fun animals and designs too.

Or if your feet get really cold, perhaps a pair made with down feathers
I have a pair of these that I keep at my parents house so I can wear them when I visit. They are super warm.

Dont forget the all so famous Ugg brand sheep skin
These look very comfy, but they were a little expensive for my budget.

Or these that are taller and made of knit – I like the balls and sweater like pattern

This season I selected these from Minnetonka. They are very warm, so I dont have to wear them with socks. And when my little pup needs to go outside, they have the hard soles that are great for indoor/outdoor.

What are your perfect slippers?

Tschoe!

Spooky Food!

At work, we have a monthly food challenge where we all create an item under one overarching theme. This month’s theme was spooky food. Since my household is currently eating healthy, I wanted to bring something that I could enjoy as well. To find my inspiration, I used pinterest. It was a great tool to find easy, spooky foods.

For the actual eggs, I wanted to use greek yogurt and give them some spice. I eventually landed on a great South Beach Recipe on Kalyn’s Kitchen that I adapted for the occasion.

Spooky Sriracha Deviled Eggs
Recipe: Ellen

7 eggs
2 T mayo or light mayo
1 T + 1 tsp. fat-free Greek Yogurt
1 1/2 tsp. yellow mustard
1-2 tsp. Sriracha sauce
1-2 tsp. relish
1/2 tsp. sea salt
Can of black olives

Make hard-boiled eggs and remove shells.

Carefully remove the yolk from each egg half.  Put yolks in a small bowl and arrange the 12 best white egg halves on a tray. Mash yolks thoroughly with a fork, then mix in the mayo, Greek yogurt, yellow mustard, Sriracha, relish and salt.  Taste to see if you want more Sriracha.

Use a rubber scraper to put the egg yolk mixture into a small plastic bag, then cut off one corner and squeeze the yolk mixture out to fill the egg white halves.

Cut six black olives into half. Use these as the body of the spider and place in the middle of the egg. Then, cut the remaining black olives into skinny, long pieces to create the legs of the spider. Arrange outside of the body.

Enjoy!

Here’s how my version turned out.

Also, the egg platter was a wedding gift and is from Crate and Barrel. It’s fantastic!

Enjoy,
Ellen
